Resetting a Course or Specific Activities for an Individual Student

In some situations, administrators or lead instructors may need to reset a course or specific course activities for an individual student. This is useful when a learner must restart a course, reattempt certain activities, or have their progress cleared so they can begin again.

This feature is not to be used for recertification purposes as it permanently deletes a user’s historical data. If you want to learn more about recertification, read Configuring Recurring Courses.

To support this need, the platform now includes a dedicated Course Reset Utility that allows authorized users to reset an entire course or select individual activities for a single student. This utility is accessible directly from the participant’s profile within the course.

Only system administrators and lead instructors have access to this feature.

Step-by-step Guide

To locate the course reset utility:

Accessing the Course Reset Utility

  1. Navigate to the course where the student is enrolled.

  2. Select Participants from the course navigation menu.

  3. Locate the student in the participant list and click on their name.

  4. The student’s course-specific profile will open. Under the More tab, locate the Reset course link in the Miscellaneous section.

  5. Click on Reset course to open the course reset utility.

Resetting the Entire Course

When the utility opens, it defaults to resetting the entire course for the selected student.

  • All course activities will be included in the reset.

  • Manual grade items associated with the student will also be cleared.

  • You will be prompted to confirm the reset before the system proceeds.

This action permanently clears all student-specific data related to the course.

Resetting Specific Activities Only

If you do not wish to reset the entire course:

  1. Toggle Reset all course activities to Off.

  2. A list of all course activities will appear, organized by course section and in the same order they appear in the course.

  3. Select the specific activities you want to reset for the student.

  4. Confirm the reset action when prompted.

Only the selected activities will be reset.

What Happens During a Reset

Depending on the type of activity, resetting may include:

  • Clearing the student’s “viewed” status

  • Removing grades

  • Deleting instructor feedback or comments

  • Purging submissions or uploaded files

  • Resetting quiz attempts, questionnaire responses, or SCORM attempts

  • Clearing progress tracking data

  • Voiding the activity completion record

Note: Activity resets are irreversible. Once performed, prior data cannot be restored.

Audit Trail

For transparency and traceability, two system events are logged automatically:

1. Course-level student reset event

Triggered when the entire course is reset. The event logs:

  • User performing the reset

  • Affected course

  • Student affected

  • Date and time

2. Activity-level student reset event

Triggered once for each activity that is reset. The event logs:

  • User performing the reset

  • Activity reset

  • Student affected

  • Date and time

These events can be reviewed using the Extended Log Search reporting tool.

Limitations

Resetting Completed Courses

Course resets are not allowed for students who already have a valid course completion record.

Exception:
If the student is within their recertification window, the course or activities may be reset. In this case, any completion data prior to the student’s current valid completion record will be preserved.

Resetting Non-student Enrollments

The reset utility is available only for users enrolled as students in the course.
Users enrolled under other roles (ex: instructor, supervisor) cannot have their progress reset.

Scope Limits for Full Course Resets

A full reset affects only the following:

  • All course activities

  • Grade items in the Gradebook not linked to a specific activity

Elements not reset include:

  • Groups and group memberships

Scope Limits for Activity Resets

Activity resets return the activity to its original state for that student. This applies only to the specific activity selected and does not affect the rest of the course.
