Managing Learning Records & Accreditation
A learning record is a digital proof that a learner has completed either a learning activity, course, or program. Learning records are stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS).
The LRS is the authoritative database that logs all learning records. A learning record looks as per the following:
John Smith completed WHMIS on December 31, 2018
Once a learning record is stored in the LRS, it can never be altered or deleted. This requirement is in line with numerous specifications that Dual Code adheres to, including for example Title 21 CFR Part 1, a the section of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) that deals with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines on electronic records and electronic signatures in the United States and Canada. While administrators and instructors with special permissions can void learning records, these records can always be recovered by unvoiding them.
How are learning records different than certificates of completion or transcripts?
A learning record is an immutable proof of completion that is permanently stored in the learning record store. It contains verifiable metadata about the user and the learning object that was completed. If a 3rd party system requires such proof, the learning environment can forward it a digitally signed copy that guarantees its authenticity. This is why Dual Code's learning environment is trusted by some of the world's largest healthcare manufacturers and solutions providers such as Roche Diagnostics and Epic Systems. But what if a third person who doesn't have access to the learning records wants to see proof of completion? That's where certificates of completion and transcripts come in.
Certificates of completion and Transcripts are PDF artifacts of the learning records. If a learner wants to show proof to someone else that they've completed a course and that someone else does not have access to the learning record, the learner can download their Certificate of Completion as a PDF file and share it with that person. Along the same line, Transcripts represent that someone has completed a program in the learning environment.
