Using Questions from the Question Bank

The question bank enables instructors to create, preview, and edit questions within a database for use in Quiz activities. It organizes questions into categories and subcategories, similar to how files are stored in folders and subfolders. These categories can be restricted for use at the site, course, or quiz level.

When setting up or updating a quiz, instructors can reuse existing questions from the question bank, eliminating the need to create new questions each time.

Step-by-step Guide

To use a question from the question bank:

  1. Go to the course in quiz in question

    1. You want to view the quiz itself. If you are viewing the settings for the quiz, you are on the wrong page. Go back on the course outline and click on the quiz title.

  2. Click on “Add question”

    1. Note that the “Add question” button only appears if the quiz doesn’t have any questions in it. If you’ve already added questions to the quiz, you’ll need to go to the “Questions” tab while editing the quiz to see all of the existing questions.

  3. Click on the “Add” hyperlink on the right side of the scdreen and then select “from question bank” as per the screenshot below

  4. In “Select a category”, select the category where your questions are currently stored.

    1. Note the dropdown menu doesn’t allow you to select questions that are stored in another course. The menu only goes up the tree. If your questions are stored in a separate course or branch, you will need to either move them to the course category or even the system so that you can reuse them in this course.

  5. Select the question(s) you want to add to your quiz

  6. Click on the “Add selected questions to the quiz” button

Important Notes

  1. When selecting questions, the dropdown menu only goes up the tree. If your questions are stored in a separate course or branch, you will need to either move them to the course category or even the system so that you can reuse them in this course

  2. If no questions are displayed, it’s likely that they are not located in the question category you are currently viewing. By default, the tool displays questions at the course level. If your questions were created in a sub-category, or at the system level (to allow reuse across multiple courses), you will need to change the category being viewed. To do this, select the appropriate question category using the “Match” option, as shown in the screenshot below.
