Managing Competencies

Competencies describe the level of understanding or proficiency of a learner in certain subject-related skills. Competency-based education (CBE), also known as Competency-based learning or Skills-based learning, refers to systems of assessment and grading where learners demonstrate these competencies.

In order to build an appraisal form, you will need to first define a competency framework, and then add individual competencies.

For example, if trying to evaluate someone’s interpersonal skills, the competency framework might be called “Interpersonal Skills” and it might consist of 5 competencies:

  1. Maintains effective relationship with co-workers and clients

  2. Exhibits tact, consideration and professionalism

  3. Responds to management direction

  4. Displays positive outlook and pleasant manner

  5. Works cooperatively in group situations
